The Scheibe SF-23 Sperling is a German side-by-side two-seater cabin high-wing monoplane with fixed tailwheel undercarriage,
designed by Dipl.Ing. Egon Scheibe. The Sperling is of a mixed construction, the fuselage being a fabric-covered steel-tube
structure and the wings being single-spar wooden structures with fabric and plywood covering. The SF-23 Spering was flown
first on 8 August 1955, with a 65 hp Continental A-68-5 engine. The initial production model was the SF-23A with a 95 hp
Continental C90-12F four-cylinder air-cooled engine, with the first production aircraft flying in September 1958.
Subsequently two further versions were introduced, the SF-23B with a 100 hp Continental O-200-B engine, and the SF-23C with
a 115 hp Lycoming O-235, the more powerful versions being suitable for glider-towing. In 1963, when production of the Sperling
was completed. one SF-23; seventeen SF-23A; four SF-23B and six SF-23C aircraft were built. |
The 1960-built Scheibe SF-23A Sperling s/n 2500 was registered D-EMAW in Germany, first as a SF 23A-W Sperling; then as a SF.23A-1
Sperling and today as a SF-23A Sperling. On 2 September 2016, Scheibe SF-23A Sperling D-EMAW was seen at its home base Flugplatz
Rheine - Esschendorf (EDXE). |
