N228AC North American T-28B Trojan c/n 219-24 bu.140566 - US Navy 140025 - Wittmundhafen AFB in Germany - 5 June 2009 Wittmundhafen air base (ETNT)

The North American Aviation T-28 Trojan was developed to replace the ageing T-6/SNJ Texan in U.S.A.F and U.S. Navy service. Designed by North American Aviation as Model NA-159 the XT-28A prototype was flying for the first time on 26 September 1949, powered by a 800 hp Wright R-1300 Cyclone 7 single-row radial. A total of 1194 examples of the T-28A model being ordered. However in 1952, the more powerful Wright R-1820-86 Cyclone 9 cylinder air-cooled radial engine was installed, and existing orders for the T-28A were transferred to this 1425 hp R-1820-86 engined model T-28B. The U.S. Navy standardised on a shipboard version of the T-28B model: the T-28C. The T-28C made his maiden flight as Model NA-226 on 19 September 1955. Basic versions delivered to the U.S.A.F. were the T-28A; T-28B. Navy versions were the T-28A; T-28B; the DT-28B drone-director aircraft and the shipboard T-28C Trojan. When production terminated in the autumn of 1957, a total of 1948 T-28 basic trainers had been manufactured for the U.S.A.F. and the U.S. Navy. After regular production of the T-28 was terminated North American Aviation received production contracts covering conversion of a total of 321 T-28As to the T-28D configuration between 1961 and 1969. In addition Sud-Aviation in France upgraded a total of 147 surplus ex-U.S. Air Force T-28As into the T-28S reconnaissance-attack aircraft configuration on behalf of the French Air Force.

The German Luftwaffe´s Jagdgeschwader 71 "Richthofen" celebrated its 50th anniversary among others with a Photocall on 5 and 6 June 2009. North American T-28B Trojan N228AC in US Navy 140025 / 252 / 5T138 was one of the highlights of this Spottertag der JG71R at Wittmundhafen Air Base near Wittmund in Germany. History of this airframe began in 1954, when it was one of a batch of 51 T-28B ordered (bureau # 140002 - 140052); the 1956-built airframe was delivered to the US Navy using the Bu. # 140025 and transferred to the US Marine Corps and assigned to SOES-12 (Station Operations and Engineer Squadron), MCAS Quantico, Virginia. On 17 October 1976, the "140025" was transferred to the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) as 5T0067, with 29 May 1978 given as struck of charge. The airframe was sold to Lester Industries, San Antonio, Texas, and departed the MASDC facilities on 31 March 1980. The same year, the airframe was delivered to the Honduras Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Hondureña) where it served until 1985 as FAH-223 with the Escuela Militar de Aviación. In June 1985, the aircraft was registered HR-AKN-P. In September 1985, the aircraft was registered N125AC in the US with Courtesy Aircraft Inc., located at the Greater Rockford Airport in Rockford, Illinois., Rockford, Illinois. After the N125AC was restored into flying condition, the North American T-28B was sold in Canada and on 5 December 1986 registered C-FJVW with J. Johnston, Edmonton, Alberta. On 3 November 1987, registration C-FJVW was cancelled, but on 20 November 1987, registration C-FJVW was restored with W. Crow, Delta, BC, as the new owner. In that period the aircraft was seen painted in red and white colours as MARINES 140025 / Quantico "sponsored by Nahanni Helicopters". On 20 August 1990, the aircraft was damaged in an incident at Lindell, BC. In 1991, the C-FVW was seen active again in the present grey 'NAVY' colours, with 'IL' painted on its tail. On 21 August 1991, registration C-FJVW was cancelled as exported to the USA and in October 1991, the North American T-28B Trojan was registered N228AC in the US with Stallion Aircraft Inc, Bensenville, IL. In July 1997, the N228AC was ferried to Brescia-Montichiari in Italy via Reykjavik, Iceland and Wick, Scotland, on delivery to Tita Rossi, Montichiari, Italy.
