One of the visitors of Wings en Wheels 2012 at Hoogeveen airfield was Piper L-18C N298SQ.
The Royal Netherlands Air Force operated over 100 Piper L-18C, L-21A and L-21B Super Cubs. The aircraft
were owned by the Army but flown and technical supported by Groep Lichte Vliegtuigen, formed by
298, 299 and 300 squadron of the Koninklijke Luchtmacht (RNethAF). Although registration N298SQ
and the Dutch markings 8A-33 suggest that this Super Cub was one of the aircraft operated by 298 Squadron
of the Royal Netherlands Air Force, it never served in Dutch services. The 1952-built Piper PA-18-95 c/n 18-1586 (frame-nr. 18-1569) USAF
serial 51-15586 entered service with the French Army (ALAT - Aviation Légère de l’Armée de Terre) as 115586. In May 1969, after being retired
from military services, the aircraft was registered in Germany as D-ELTQ. On 16 May 1975, Super Cub D-ELTQ was heavily damaged in a
crash and registration D-ELTQ was cancelled. The aircraft was rebuilt and in October 1993, registration D-EHBR was alloted but ntu.
In 1999, the aircraft was registered D-EBBR. Today, the aircraft is registered N298SQ as a Piper PA-19 with Bogco Aviation Inc., Wilmington (DE), USA.
Super Cub N298SQ has its home at Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands. |
