The Avid Aircraft Avid Magnum is a two-seat ultralight aeroplane with a fixed tricycle undercarriage.
In 1983, Dean Wilson developed the Avid Flyer, a lightweight aircraft with Cuyana engine and
tricycle landing gears. It was an instant success at Oshkosh in 1983 and won the "Best New Design"
award. Avid Aircraft Inc., Caldwell, Idaho, and later Montana, USA, produced the homebuilt kits of the Avid aircrafts, with
the most famous model being the Mark IV. The Mark IV was offered as a folding wing kit-plane; the composition
of the building package was tuned on the customer wishes. The customer could choose the engine, tri-gear or
tail wheel, wing, like the S.T.O.L.-wing, etc. In 2001, the Avid Aircraft Avid Magnum was introduced as a further development of the Mk.IV.
The original company, Avid Aircraft Inc of Caldwell, Idaho, produced a full line of high-wing light aircraft kits
before going bankrupt in 1998. Acquired by Jim Tomash, the company was moved to Ennis, Montana. Production
of kits was re-established in the new facility. The factory also served as a customer build centre where
customers who purchased Avid kits could complete their aircraft. In November 2003, the Avid Aircraft closed again.
Parallel to the restart of Avid Aircraft, production of the Avid Flyer aircraft ran at Airdale, Wisconsin: after
Avid Aircraft initially went out of business in 1998, Airdale Sportplane and Supply was formed in 1999.
Airdale initially started making parts for Avid designs and later put the two-seat Avid Mk IV back into production.
At one time the company also produced the Avid Magnum as a kit aircraft. As of mid 2017 the company was no longer trading.
In October 2017, Avid Aircraft was restarted under the name Avid Aircraft LLC in Unionville, Iowa. |
