On 24 May 1958, Martinair was founded by Martin Schröder as Martin's Luchtvervoer Maatschappij NV, known as Martin's Air Charter (MAC). The company name was changed to Martinair Holland in 1974. Martinair Holland is a subsidiary of KLM and Nedloydd and operated in 2005 a fleet of 3 Airbus 320-200, 1 Boeing 737-800, 4 Boeing 747-200, 6 Boeing 767-300 and 7 McDonnell Douglas MD-11 airliners. Martinair uses the Airbus A.320 on their holiday flights out of Groningen Airport Eelde in the Netherlands. On 22 July 2003, on flight MP216 to Crete they had to use the larger Boeing 767. On this day it got clear to the holidaymakers on this flight why Groningen Airport Eelde wants to increase the runway length to 2500 meters. The captain of the loaded Boeing 767 decided to divert the flight to Rotterdam this caused by the 1800 meters runway. The passengers travelled over 245 km by bus to Rotterdam and got finally boarded in the 767 and really started their flight to Heraklion.
On 26 July 2003, when the Martinair Boeing 767 PH-MCL was photographed at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) the airliner was painted in special "Fox Kids" colors.
The ICAO Aircraft Type Designator for the Boeing 767-31A/ER is B763.
